Touch Of Evil

343. Orson Welles: Touch Of Evil (1958)

I have seen this movie for the second time recently; already knowing how great it is and still wowing at it's amaze-ness. The famous opening scene was taken as one shot. There is always a lot I want to say about a film(maker) that I admire, but I tend to repeat myself, and after all much better words have been said and written already.

The Cranes Are Flying / Letyat Zhuravli

#338 Mikhail Kalatozov: The Cranes Are Flying (1957)

I can do nothing else but highly recommend this movie - I went into it without reading the synopsis, watched it almost without blinking; not sure if I can pin it on the captivating story, stunning visuals, or falling in love with the lead actress Tatiana Samoilova. The scene depicted brought a tear to my eye...

The Additional List

Looking for an updated list of the 1001-series, I have come across the information that some countries add their own movies to the list in their respective editions. This means there are no less than 141 new movies to be added here, most of which will (I imagine) be a bit daunting to find. (Having seen only three movies from this list so far is not the greatest start either). Had to be noted that Greece is very eager in adding movies to their editions - I wonder if Croatia will ever do the same? There are certainly some older classics worth a watch.

Hour of the Wolf / Vargtimmen

#505 Ingmar Bergman: Hour Of The Wolf (1968)

I am already working on upping my percentage of the list, by watching another movie by one of my favourite directors. As it was described as 'horror' I decided I could only watch it during the day, even though I couldn't imagine real horror but rather a psychological drama; the first half of the movie was 'tame' in that respect, but the second half brought the promised disturbing scenes (indeed in psychological sense), mostly thanks to spooky sounds/music. Overall I still can't decide what to think of it...for me it is not among Bergman's best work, yet again it is definitely worth a watch.
Btw how magnificant is Liv Ullman again?

Rope

#221  Alfred Hitchcock 'Rope' (1948)

It may be a sort of a cliche, but Hitchcock IS one of my favourite directors, and this one of his finest movies (though Roger Ebert doesn't seem to agree..!). I found the 'play' around the wooden chest quite suspenseful. The fact that it was taking place in one apartment only and that it comprises long shots lasting minutes, just added to the overall positive experience. Thank you Hitch!

Muriel's Wedding

#911  P.J.Hogan: Muriel's Wedding (1994)

Next I wanted to include the 90's, the time of my binge-watching of every single movie in the local videostore :) The thing is, I haven't seen most of those movies since, but those that I have, they show how much a vision of things and emotional reception can change in a decade or two. I have seen Muriel's Wedding (again!) on a plane recently for the 2nd time; and although I kinda remember it more as a comedy than a drama, this has now been proven to be vice versa. However, its quirkiness is still loveable! Very happy that both Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths went on to make memorable careers. One of the best female buddy couples on-screen ever!

The Heartbreak Kid

#573  Elaine May: The Heartbreak Kid (1972)

After a line of movies that I happened to love or found entertaining, here is one that I didn't particularly fancy - it did entertain with a number of scenes, like the one pictured when the main character, newly married, tries to win over the father of a young girl he met on his honeymoon. The premise itself is painful to say the least, and throughout the movie I mostly felt unsympathetic and annoyed. Which I guess doesn't say about the film as much as it does about my preferences...nevertheless, this is something I don't believe I will watch twice.
On a lighter note, Cybill is uebercute, and Grodin still remains one of those faces you remember fondly from your childhood.
